5 Phyllostachys Aureosulcata Spectabilis
A beautiful bamboo with plentiful, colourful culms
Origin: Japan
Height: 5 - 10m - average 6.5m
Hardiness: - 18 degrees celcius; Zone 6b
Exposure: Full Sun
Use: Any situation but looks particularly good in a Japanese Garden
This is a plant that produces a mass of culms. The culms can grow quite thick (approx 1.5inches) and produce a deep red & purple tinge. The plant is quite at home in shade but is best planted in full sun to enhance its colouring.
During a harsh winter the plants leaves can suffer some scorching but this is quite common & the plant is perfectly hardy. Any damaged leaves will quickly become replaced the following Spring. If you want to keep this plant in check the culms can be thinned and reduced in height to meet your own requirements.
This is a good clump forming bamboo but it is one for the larger garden so that its true beauty can be appreciated.
