This hardy evergreen reaches 2.5–4m tall and displays eye-catching red culms in early spring that gradually transform into an attractive white-and-green checkered pattern. Exceptionally cold-tolerant down to -20°C, it flourishes in full sun or partial shade when planted in moist, well-drained soil. Tough and evergreen, it forms dense clumps of upright young green canes tinted red, becoming greener as they mature. The glossy green leaves, blue-green beneath, reach 15cm long, adding texture and movement throughout the year. An excellent choice for adding year-round structure and visual interest to any garden.
An excellent choice for privacy screening. Suitable for growing in pots.
Remove weak, dead, damaged or spindly stems in spring and thin to show off stems to best effect. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming. Suitable for pruning.
